Born in Baltimore on July 3, 1956, Montel Williams joined the United States Marine Corps after graduating high school in 1974. After basic training, he was sent to the Desert Combat Training Center at Twenty-nine Palms, near Palm Springs, California.

At the age of twenty-nine, his superiors were impressed by his leadership skills, and he was recommended to, and accepted into, the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport, Rhode Island. He completed a one-year course and was accepted at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis.

Upon arriving in Annapolis on July 6, 1976, he was honorably discharged as a member of the Marine Corps and enlisted in the Navy as a midshipman. While at Annapolis, Williams studied Mandarin Chinese and graduated with a degree in general engineering and a minor in international security issues. It was in Annapolis that Williams first shaved his head. Upon graduation in 1980, he became the first Black Marine to complete and graduate from Annapolis Preparatory School.

Commissioned as a signalman, he spent the next 1½ years in Guam as a cryptologic officer in charge of naval intelligence, where he served at sea and ashore. In 1982, he was transferred to the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, where he studied Russian for a year. In 1983, he was transferred to Fort Meade in Maryland, where he worked with the National Security Agency. What Williams did there is unclear, due to the sensitive nature of intelligence work, but he performed a variety of intelligence tasks. He landed on a ship when Grenada was attacked.

After three years aboard a submarine, Williams, now a full commander, was promoted to supervising cryptologic officer at the Naval Support Unit at Fort Meade. As he consulted with his staff he discovered a gift for public speaking. In 1988, he started informal counseling for wives and families of missionaries in his order. He was then asked to speak to a local group of children in Kansas City, Missouri, about the importance of leadership and how to overcome obstacles on the way to success - thus beginning a three-year career as a motivational speaker.

Williams traveled the country speaking to more than three million young people across the country and gave up his sea commission to engage in full-time behavior. He left the Navy with the rank of lieutenant and received the Navy Victory Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and Navy Commendation Medal. In addition, he has reached out to thousands of parents, educators and business leaders, encouraging them to work together to address youth issues, trends and encourage young people to reach their highest potential. This outreach effort eventually led to "The Montel Williams Show" on television.
